ABOUT OUR SPECIALTY SUET

Our suet is handcrafted right here in Portland, Oregon. All of our ingredients are purchased from small, local vendors and we make our suet in very small batches to insure the highest quality, freshness, and consistency is attained. It is not mass-produced in any way.

This is definitely not your run-of-the-mill suet. It is premiuim, specialty suet. But, it is not nearly as expensive as other specialty suets on the market. As we have been told by customer after customer, it will also attract more birds than other suets you can buy.

We have tested all of our suet in our own backyard, as well as many yards across the country. Since we started using our own suet in our yard, we have seen a big increase in the number of suet eating birds.

Ways to attract birds to your yard

Here are a few simple tips to attract a wide variety of bird species into your yard. Please let us know if you have found some other ways!

1) First and foremost, put up some bird feeders! There are many types of feeders; Hopper, Thistle, Tube, Platform, Ground, Suet, Nectar, and many more. Here is what most stores don't want you to know...the birds don't care what a feeder looks like or how much you spent on it. As long as you fill the feeder (whatever type it is) with different types of seed, you will attract birds. One of the most important things to remember is to find a feeder that will clean up easily. (More on the types of seed below).

2) Have a water source! Bird baths, ponds, or fountains are a great way to attract birds to your yard. We have 2 bird baths and a small pond. The most important thing you want to remember is that the water in your yard should mimic natural water sources. Don't go for the elaborate, deep bird baths. You want shallow pool of water that gradually slopes, so that the birds can slowly wade into the water. As with bird feeders, find a bath that can easily be scrubbed out.

3) Nest/roosting boxes. This is a big one. As with feeders, you can either purchase some or build your own. Chickadees, Flickers, Wrens, Nuthatches, Bluebirds, etc, etc. The list of birds that use nest boxes goes on and on. You want your nest box to resemble a tree cavity. This doesn't mean that it has to be built out of bark, but that it should be built to the specifications for a specific species. For example, a Black-Capped Chickadee prefers a nest box that has a roughly 3"x5" floor, is about 9" tall has an entrance hole of 1 1/8th"; whereas a Bluebird prefers a 5"x5" floor with a 1 1/2" entrance. The differences are subtle, but they can make a big difference.

4) More on food and seed. Black-Oil Sunflower Seed (BOSS) is one of the most effective seeds that you can purchase. It is, by far, the most popular seed fed to birds. Almost any species of wild bird will feed on BOSS. A few exceptions are: Hummingbirds, Lesser Goldfinches, and Robins. But for the most part, Black-Oil Sunflower Seeds are the first seed that you should buy for your yard.

5) Other food. After Black-Oil Sunflower Seed, one of the most popular and best foods to feed your birds is suet. Suet is fat (from either a cow or pig) that has been rendered down and mixed with many different ingredients. From just plain suet (fat) to suet mixed with seed, nuts, and insects. Whatever you want to feed your birds, it's available. The high fat content in suet gives your birds the energy that is needed for mating, migrating, and just plain surviving. This is a food that you can feed your birds year-round.
